Patent Leather

Originally patent shoes involved applying successive coats of a linseed oil based lacquer to produce a glossy impermeable finish.  Today, most modern patent leathers have a plastic coating (PVC or polyurethane) to give that high gloss finish.

Caring for Patent shoes is relatively simple.  To clean patent, wipe surface with a damp cloth, and then buff with a dry soft cloth.   Overtime the gloss will become dull and need to be restored.  To keep it's high shine look it's important to only use products specifically designed for Patent leather - regular shoe polish won't work.  We recommend Patent Leather Dressing

Applying Patent Leather Dressing instructions:

  • Clean shoes first by wiping with a damp cloth. Allow to dry.
  • Apply a small amount of Patent dressing to a cotton cloth and rub onto shoes.
  • Repeat until both shoes are covered.
  • To finish buff off with a clean soft cloth.

You will see the results immediately and your patent shoes will look just like new.
